Overview:1966 Fiat 600

 

 

Fiat built the 600 as a utilitarian automobile to be capable of carrying four adults in relative comfort, weighing less than 600kg, cheap to produce and compact in proportion. The model is deservedly known as "the car that put Italy on the road.” Its unique, lightweight, and compact build formed the basis of nearly every type of light motor vehicle imaginable, and it was possibly the most versatile car of the post-war period.

 

Fiat introduced the 600 at the Geneva Motor Show of 1955.  It was part of the postwar Italian “economic miracle” that helped mobilize the country, being produced in large numbers for its time.  As released, the 600 was a two door, four seat car with a 633cc, water cooled, four cylinder engine located behind the rear seats and driving the rear wheels.  Other notable features were the monocoque construction and the independent suspension on all four wheels.  The layout for the 600 was chosen for a simple reason –low manufacturing costs. 

 

The 600 enjoyed a long lifespan, and Fiat not only used the 600 chassis for other models such as the Multipla, they also sold chassis and drivetrain components to other small manufacturers for their own specialized offerings.

 

This example of Fiat’s highly acclaimed 600 model, from 1966, has been pristinely maintained to allow its original glory to shine.  This car has only 38,587 miles, which is remarkable for its age. It features the classic 47 CI engine with 32 HP - 4-speed transmission.
